I think it’s funny how ESPN and all the experts made this seem like a two man race between Mike Trout and Miguel Cabrera until about a week ago. I was watching SportsCenter the other day and the analysts finally threw Josh Hamilton’s name into the mix. And they really were just throwing his name in there. It was like they were throwing him a bone and he realistically had no chance of winning the A.L. MVP. But why??
So let’s talk MVP statistic for those of you who have forgotten what the acronym “MVP” stands for. It stands for the “Most Valuable Player.” Don’t you think the Most Valuable Player would be on a team that is leading their division or is at least going to make the playoffs? Matt Kemp had better numbers than Ryan Braun last year, but he lost the MVP honor to Braun because the Milwaukee Brewers made the playoffs and the Los Angeles Dodgers simply did not. Tough luck bro. Braun displayed more value because he made his team better with his play. I think we have a similar situation here. Trout was the undoubted favorite for the MVP title a month or two ago when the Angels seemed like a lock for one of the wildcard spots. His team had a better record and a better shot at the playoffs when he was on the field (now 3.5 games back of Wildcard No. 2) than Cabrera’s team did when he was on the field (now 1.5 games back of divisional lead).
With less than 15 games left in the regular season, the Texas Rangers have the second best record in baseball and are 28 games above .500. The Rangers also have a four-game lead over the A’s and have scored 38 more runs than anyone in baseball this year. In 150 games, the Texas Rangers have scored 761 runs, so let’s see how much Hamilton has contributed to this high octane offense…
First in MLB in HRs (42), second in MLB in RBIs (123), third in MLB in Runs (98) and a more than respectable .287 batting average after a horrific slump in the middle portion of the season.
So let’s not just throw Hamilton’s name in the ballot and let’s actually consider voting for him for A.L. MVP because he absolutely deserves it.
